Sophia Loren si concede una pausa durante le riprese del film Timbuctù (Legend of the Lost) del 1957 recitato insieme a John Wayne e Rossano Brazzi. L’attrice è in compagnia del regista Henry Hathaway, del produttore Robert Haggiag e del cameraman Jack Cardiff, ed è seduta sui ruderi romani accanto al Tumulo dei Curiazi, all’altezza del V miglio dell’Appia Antica. La “regina viarum”, come la definì il poeta Stazio, è considerata da sempre fra le opere più belle ed importanti dei romani, ed inizia da Porta San Sebastiano arrivando fino a Brindisi. La parte ancora ben visibile si trova nel tratto aperto nel 312 a.C. dal censore Appio Claudio Cieco (da cui il nome Appia).
